In Indian culture property doesn't automatically flow to the wife. It actually flows to the brother. I was made aware of this recently when a friend that happened to be Indian died suddenly. The estate goes to the brothers.

I think the the line in the dirt here is that 17 is considered the de facto age of consent in many states for both boys and girls. The issue is that she was his teacher, which is a different kettle of fish. In that case age isn't the issue as much as the position of authority that she had.
